The Living Stones (as part of Interim Degree Show) at The University of Salford, UK

Exhibition images of 'The Living Stones' - a multi-media installation showcasing the work in progress for Best's Final Major Project at BA (Hons) Photography, University of Salford. The work encompasses two matte paper photographic prints, taken on B&W 120 film, held upright with wooden plinths. Accompanying these images are a moving image performance presentation (see section Moving Images for full film) projected onto a wooden screen. The same fabric used within the short film is implemented within the installation to bring the film into an exhibition space.
Road To Nowhere, Road to Somewhere (as part of wider exhibit 'Journeys') at Northern Monk Refectory, Manchester, UK - 25th November 2024
Exhibition images of 'Road to Nowhere, Road to Somewhere'. A multi-media installation that sees Best attempt to contemporise the Land Art movement of the 1960s. "He is interested in working with the resources of antiquity, whilst using the tools of mechanised modernity. Found materials such as sticks, stones and leaves are accompanied with photographic prints, sewn together onto recycled satin fabric. The photo series stresses the importance of the human connection to nature, with the installation reinforcing such an idea, with its recycled and found materials".
"Best finds inspiration and influence in the work of Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy through their own attempts to reconnect with the environment. An individual's connection to the environment is primary. We worship and sanctify it, yet also destroy it. If anything, this exhibition will seek to inform the audience of the beauty of what is around us, in an attempt to move more towards worshipping and sanctifying nature, rather than the destruction of nature. Ecstasy can be found anywhere. A natural high could be found in connecting oneself to nature".
"As well as exploring the influence that land art has on how we perceive the world around us, Best intends to showcase the connection between the art mediums of Land Art and Photography. Land artists are photographers capturing ephemeral works, which reflect the wonder and temporality of nature, which in turn will reinforce our need to reconnect and reclaim our relationship to the natural world. Reconnection leads to understanding, which leads to appreciation, which leads to love, which leads to protection".
